  1. Nikole,
I really enjoyed reading about Carolyn Burke. Your paper served as a great introduction for me. I really liked the quote about her ideas on theory, that it should be subject to reflection and change. I agree that her focus on literacy, miscue analysis, and inquiry has made many contributions to the field of education, especially her Reading Interview. In another course, I just completed a literature review on assessment, and discovered that Burke's interview was included in a compilation of assessments titled the Early Literacy Profile. She was indeed a proponent of inquiry, as was Jerome Harste, the prominent theorist I chose to study. There were some commonalities between Burke and Harste as they both worked together at NCTE and as professors at Indiana University.
In one article written by Harste and Burke (1980) titled Examining Instructional Assumptions: The Child as Informant, they focused on a case study of a girl named Alison, whose teacher failed to see Alison's potential due to her own beliefs and assumptions.
    Thank you!

  2. Nikole,
I too enjoyed reading about Carolyn Burke. I learned a lot from reading about her different practices of inquiry questions and challenging the students to critically think about a topic. Collaboration is the best tool for broadening ones thinking on a topic and being challenged by others topics as well. I like her idea about literature circles as well. She seems to have been a very influential theorist, leaving a great impact from her research. For example, her reading interview process is a very in depth process, but it will get the students thinking and learning more about the topic which is a valuable trait. Your paper was very organized and it had a nice flow to it which made it very easy for me to read and learn about Burke's career.

  3. Nikole,
My theorist also believed in an inquiry-based approach to literacy. Your paper was very informative and I learned a lot about Carolyn Burke. The reading interview process is unique and I think it would be very beneficial for students. It would allow the students to become more involved in their learning and to think more critically about what they are doing.
